a memorial weekend.....

Somewhere between the grilling out and the picnics we will enjoy this weekend, a moment should be taken to remember the troops who will not be able to share their time with us any longer. A moment when we remember the reason for this weekend other than having three consecutive days off. We may not agree with this war, or the administration that put us there, but it should not lesson the debt we owe to the men and women who set off to battle in order to secure the very freedoms we have. May our current troops come home safely, and may the world come together to celebrate peace as it should be.

Excellent and important post Ellen! It is not Memorial Day up here in Canada but I will make time to think of the soldiers abroad and will wish for their safe return!

I was thinking about your family when I wrote this... because they are the only people I know over there right now. Yes... may they come home very safely!
Have a great weekend, chickadee!

You too, sweetie! I hope you and BF have some nice plans for a great weekend yourselves!

Why I think you did an outstanding job with your tribute... and to think I almost used the same picture. How coincidental was that?
Have a great weekend, sweetie!

How very nice of you to set aside a moment for the soldiers. They deserve our thoughts and well wishes for a safe return and an end to the war.
Does Canada have a Memorial Day?

Hope you have a great weekend!

What days off? I could only hope for a day off.... I will be working a majority of the weekend, and probably have Monday off (so far). We will probably grill something I suspect, but I wouldn't mind ordering out!

Have a wonderful weekend... and kudos again for the publicity!

Thanks Ellen;

I remember a time when I would walk down to Park Square and be spit on for wearing a uniform. I never understood that but it happen and that is how life was at one time in this country. Now I am praised. Funny...its the same uniform! 30+ years later and the world is a whole different place. Except for those who made that sacrifice! Theirs will always be etched in stone for eternity even though their cause is long forgotten.

Happy Memorial Day Ellen.

Love Karl

Happy Memorial Day Week-end, Ellen!

I grew up with terrific Parades for this holiday, (Metro-West of Beantown) n my kids marched with Band n Colorguard in High school years to commemorate the ultimate sacrifices by all the war veterans over the years. We do revere the gift given by all the lives taken, although it's always tough to agree with the damage of war.

This year I've nothing on the schedule at all, n that's good, cause I'm worn out!
I hope you get your day off, you certainly need it too!

Remember when the Veterans came home from Vietnam, and they too were spit on? Funny how the two Gulf Wars and 9/11 have changed all that.
Enjoy your weekend off... you are deserving of it.... and enjoy the grill out (I'm still envious of your menu, hahaha!)
Happy Memorial Day to you!

I remember all the parades too. As a kid it was fun to be part of the festivities and celebrations.... and I even remember being on a float in my hometown in CT one year for the girl scouts. (That was a good 40 years ago, when I was just a kid... but it doesn't seem like that much time has gone by already.)

I hope you have a nice restful weekend... you are deserving of all the time off you can get, sweetie!
Happy Memorial Day!

I am reminded on a daily basis of the sacrifice of our fighting forces. My namesake was my fathers best friend, Neal Hampton Rhude, and he was below decks on the U.S.S. Houston when a Japanese torpedo hit them directly in the crew quarters. I carry his name as a reminder of the sacrafice of one man in a war many years ago, but I never forget the sacrafices of all those who died in the service of their country.

Wow... your father certainly respected his friend if he named you after him. What a nice rememberance. How sad to hear of his untimely death though.

I did go to your link, and it reminds me of the many cemetaries I've seen of military dead. What is really sad is to read the dates, for most of them are very young. Wouldn't it be so nice if we could find a way to settle our differences without all the bombs, torpedos and fighting?

I went to Arlington when I was in DC, (8th Gr) n I think the impact is in the acres n acres- it gives a visual impact statement to how expensive freedom is...

Here's to better luck !
