watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat.......
So here we are at the third anniversary of a war nobody wants. While our current government ponders the quest of how we are going to get out of this mess, daily terrorist acts continue to dominate our news, and many innocent people become the pawns in this quandry. What a world, what a world.....
It's not like we can just pull out, although that seems like the easy answer. Our President had a hard enough time convincing the countries of the world that this was the right course, and he's not about to back out now. While he continues to blow out his relighting candles on the birthday cake of this anniversary, in our hindsight, we realize that all tactics have changed. What looked good on paper in the "war room" is not being played out according to the blueprints that "convinced" us we were being noble to bring democracy to an area that "needed us". The Middle East is no happier that we are there invading their lands than we are about being there. But being true to their course, and we to ours, there seems to be no magical moment where everybody just puts their guns down and walks away. It further seems that we have far surpassed the point where there will be an understanding reached by both sides... and evidence to that is the continuing terrorist acts held in random soft spots around the world, and mostly in Iraq itself.
They are convinced that we are the infidels, and ingrained thinking on their part means that we will have many more years ahead of us; second and third generations who feel the need to press on in the absence of the leaders who started this course. If bin Laden were to be captured today, it still wouldn't stop, as his beliefs are too grounded into the minds of his followers. Proof of that is the capture of Saddam Hussain. Perhaps we feel that a bad leader was taken out, but Iraq is still a hot-bed of hatred, that has esculated into a civil war... and not brought peace to the area as we had hoped. His followers still proceed to conduct unnatural acts against their own people, or anyone else who has befriended or helped the United States. In many cases, it is the innocent people who just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, just going about their day in the marketplace, that become victims of car bombs.
We are not fighting on the same terms our forefathers fought in World War I or II, where there was a defined enemy in a defined country. It was clear that if you were defeated, a great ceremony was conducted, treaties were signed, and life went on. We even returned back to build up these countries that were, for the most part, reduced to rubble. Somehow, the world no longer revolves around that theory. Now the "terrorists" are all over, and the quest is that we stop terrorism in order for our future generation to live in a world of peace between Christians and Muslums. This is a tall order to fill, and we seem to be lacking the blueprints that is able to pull this miracle off. Too many lines have been blurred and too much hatred has developed in order to help to unite over common causes.
What some see as a eventual need for the world to behave in a civilized manner in order to combat environmental problems that plague us, others see as the holy grail of unifying the world into one religion that answers to no one but Allah... everything else be damned. After all, it is Allah's will if the world were to end tomorrow. It has caused the worst rift for both sides.... both feeling their cause is better than the other. In the meantime, the people between the causes suffer greatly, and the world continues on with all sides firmly sticking to their ground. What is amazing about this is that we will all continue to lose ground, if we do not come together to save the very ground we are standing on.
So, what to do? Well, we could bomb the crap out of them, but that doesn't look too good in the annals of history. It may stop the problem now, or at least slow it down a bit, but probably not.
Besides, we have to remember that everything is not confined to just one country anyway. So like Bullwinkle, we would end up pulling a growling rhino out of the hat instead of a rabbit. This is not good. How about becoming less dependant on the resources of the Middle East so we no longer need their oil.... then slap them with embargos as we did Cuba. Well, that would probably collapse their economy, but it's not likely that it would stop the terrorists, as they have their own agendas anyway. It seems that we have stepped on a tightrope that feels more like a double-edged sword.
There are no easy answers.... and this situation will continue on into another Presidency. After all, there are no "off" switches currently available to shut down this mess that started on 9/11. We were asleep at the wheel then, and continue to nap along when it comes to protecting our own shores. Any laws and rules we put in place, have continually been pushed aside while we try to be politically correct in the eyes of the world. One does not have to look far to see that our current government is only using their elected status as a positioning tool for the next election. Ask any one of them how they would pull a rabbit out of their hat, and don't be too surprised if the rhino resurfaces again. As Bullwinkle would say: "oooops, wrong hat!" We are in for the long haul, folks........ and no magician is in sight. Try to explain that to our children.

I think Bush doesn't really care about public opinion right now just because he knows he can't get re-elected. If it was his first term, he might, MIGHT at least try to pad the situation in the public eye....although I know he probably still wouldn't pull out anyways. Sigh, a lot comes from trying to get revenge on someone that burnt your dad, huh? I hope to God Canada's Prime Minister doesn't turn into Bush....because he's already looking like a Bush Jr. to me.
Scary, scary, scary. What a huge mess we find ourselves in.
All I really have to say about this whole topic is that I just want my family members to come home safely.
I agree with Jen!

With the way Bush is acting you'd almost think he didn't care about his public opinion, but recently Bush has been out in the US trying to field questions from the general public in a "town hall" setting, sans the pre-script questions. His staff thought that this might raise his low approval ratings. He has had some ups with his humor, but mostly been brought down by Helen Thomas. Needless to say, I don't think it's working out too well for him.
One thing that most of our Presidents want is a legacy, and his so far won't look too good on the history books. If for some reason this war between the Christians and Muslums does get sorted out, he will become the leader that "had the vision" to start the ball rolling against terrorism.
We Americans are funny that way. When Nixon died, the reporters were all over themselves to print a story about a man who had the best interests of the public in mind. What they forgot was that Nixon was an angry paranoid man who lied his way in office, and wiretapped his "enemies". He wasn't called Tricky Dick for nothing.
As far as Bush's motives, I agree with you about the revenge... but also add the fact that he is an oilman. His interests are right where we should expect them to be: himself.

A huge crazy mess, indeed.
I also hope your family members will come home safely, Jen. It's scary to think how close you are to the situation, and how much it will effect your family. I just hope the whole mess doesn't call for the draft to come back. Somedays I am under the belief that we should just go over there and bomb the crap out of them... but I fear that it would only turn the situation from bad to worse.
There just doesn't seem to be any easy answer here, does there?
such a mess isn't it. I don't know what he can do now... he is there and has committed troops. Can't go in and not finish the job, even when the job was wrong in the first place.

I know... and that scares me too.
Sometimes I feel like we were the ones who awoke a sleeping giant.
The world is in gloomy shape right now, and instead of pulling together the greatest minds to fix things, we are fighting a war over beliefs, resources and hurt feelings.
Sad, so sad......
I think there are "easy" answers but no one wants to deal with them. The easy answer is, withdraw anyway. Save some face, declare you did what you set out to do, and that this isn't our country and these aren't our citizens, good luck, ta ta, and leave.
Ellen - Wait.... They had a plan in the war room?
OH MAN NEWSFLASH!
I don't know about that.
It seems that our "Elected Officials," 'cough' were tripping on acid when they dreamed this whole thing up.
When I look back on all the news blurbs and statements that were made; along with all the lies we were told. It just doesn't make sense to me.
As it currently stands the price tag for each American family from this war stands at $30,000 each family.
Ok, I'm taking on 30k in debt for a war, that has no end in sight, no clear defined goal, and I get what for all of this?
I get to be hated by people that don't even know me.
I'm sorry, I support our troops, and I feel bad for the crap they have to deal with day in and out. For the poorly fortified armor on their vehicles which could have been avoided had we waited.
It just seems as though Bushco, was in a serious rush to get into this.
I was watching a news clip yesterday about a memo that surfaced about Bush suggesting how we could provoke this thing by painting American planes with UN colors to prove they (Iraq) where defying the UN resolutions.
Yeah, he wasn't looking for a war right?
You're right though, now we're all pawns to an avalanche of pain none of us can stop.
God help us all.
Peace & Hugs,

It really is quite the mess now, and there is no turning back the clock. This is something that is going to effect generations of Americans. The debt load being created by Bushco is going to devastate the country for many years to come. And there seems to be no end to the spending.
I think one of the biggest cover-ups in terms of this war is how it is being funded. Social Secuirty in the US is not in trouble, it would be fine if it was left alone, but it wasn't. Bushco have been 'borrowing' money from Social Security to pay for their deficits. So, Social Security is now going broke because it is being used to fund the war in Iraq. Nice job Bushy.
The only satisfactory thing that could happen now is to have Bush impeached and charged for war crimes. I see no other way to fix things. The democrats need to grow a backbone and get Bush out of office. Because its already looking like the Democrats are going to lose the next election in 2008, since they seem to be stuck on nominating Hilary Clinton. Stupid Democrats. :)
I'm sure the anniversary of the 'end' of this war will be a much happier one- than it's beginning- n a national Holiday.
The Dems need new faces to step up in the election quick!
None of us want this cost in dollars or lives!

That was my thinking the day they caught Hussain. Just pack everything up, brush your hands off and let the people take care of themselves; they are not our problem, and never really were.
(I also never really thought we should have been in Iraq anyway.)
Then we should have spent that money on securing our shores and closing down our borders.

Yeah, the war room... you know the place they call *the best laid plans of mice and men*.
Regardless of whether we are in Iraq or not, they hate us and everything we stand for. Okie-dokie then... close down the borders and don't let them in, and declare a "cold war". Then use the resources we have to hunt down the ones that are already here as sleeper cells and put them on a slow boat back across the ocean.
I do support our troops, just not the people who put them in the position they are in now... especially since they sent them in so poorly equipped. Rather like sending the Christians to the lions again, huh?

No doubt this mess is the brainchild of BushCo., and one we will pass on to the generations behind us... not only in monetary means, but in ways to extract ourselves from the disaster. It is not going to go away as soon as GWB thought it was going to. He must have had visions that this war was going to be like his Daddy's... short, sweet and over. It's turned into a long, nasty and expensive venture... with many costs in lives on both sides.
Impeaching Bush only means that Cheney takes over, which is the mouthpiece for Bush in the first place. As much as that seems like a good plan, we need to get the whole lot of them out. I don't find that the Democrats have much better to offer in terms of a leader either.... and you are right to see them as spineless.
If Hillary were to run, we'd be in serious trouble because the Republicans could put anybody up against her, and stand a better chance of winning just because Hillary is not well liked. She'd be smart to put her political aspirations on hold forever, do her little stint in the Senate, then call it a life.
As much as I know I'll catch flack from saying this, I'd still like to see Gore run again.

I often wonder if we'll see the end of all this. I think if we were fighting just one country where everything were in one place, we'd stand a better chance of seeing an end. But because they are everywhere, it seems like it will take generations to root out all the hate. But let's face it.... Christians and Muslums have been at odds since the 1st century, only the weapons have gotten "better" over time.
In the meantime, we are facing natural global problems that need to be addressed... so the world might just collapse on it's own before this mess can all be sorted out.
Ellen, 'zactly!
The war....It is just a HUGE MESS!

Ain't it though? .... and with no end in sight that I can see.
