happy feet.......
There are some days when duty calls, and there is no hitting the snooze button to stall the summons. You must hit the door running, and it requires the most comfortable pair of shoes you own to see you through the day. Nothing seems to fit the bill more than a good pair of sneakers.... or as they call them in Atlanta, tennis shoes.
Since I am not a tennis player, and have a New England vocabulary still, I call them sneakers, or "sneaks" for short.
I am very lucky that I get to wear them everyday..... as no caterer is worth a darn in high heels. With as much running around that we do, and slippery kitchen floors to deal with, it's required footwear. When I get home around noonish to do paperwork, I can slip them right off and walk around barefoot; a perk when you have a home office. No matter how comfortable sneakers are, even by noon, your feet are weary of shoes altogether. Slipping off the confines of footwear lessens the barking your feet yell to your legs.
No amount of comfort has been afforded me this week when it comes to shoes. The amount of running around has increased due to a co-worker on vacation, and thankfully due back tomorrow. What started out as a slow and quiet week, actually ended up in a lot of last minute orders. Whoopie! Job security at it's finest. Yet, it takes a toll on the dogs, if you know what I mean. Perhaps it's time to go shoe shopping after all, as I hear switching off shoes throughout the day is the best thing you can do for your feet. Or maybe, I'm just getting foot- cranky in my old age. Naw..... I need to go shoe shopping!
It's not one of my favorite shopping sprees, and I'd rather go grocery shopping if I had my druthers, but we do need foot protection. Since I only own a total of five pairs of shoes, two pairs of dress oxfords, one pair of good sneakers, one pair of yard shoe sneakers, and flip flops, it's time to expand the wardrobe in that area. I actually did venture into a store a few weeks back and loitered through the shoe department. All of a sudden the world went from black and white to beautiful color as the loveliest pair of dress shoes stared back at me from the rack. They were perfect in every way, except they were brown, and I was looking for black shoes. The heel was just enough so that toppling over wouldn't be a problem, and they were even in my size. Best of all, the price was within my budget...just not my budget for that week. I left them on the rack.... not without trying them on first, and doing a little runway walk, of course.
I did buy a pair of new sneakers (Dr. Scholls), and have been spending my time breaking them in a little. New sneakers are nice, but they do require a few wears in order to tame them of their stiffness. Perhaps with this week being busy, it wasn't a good time to give them that test run. Regardless, I never remember that rule when I purchase new shoes. I'm only too happy to wear them immediately.... mostly because I've already over-worn the last pair. (Don't we all, though?)
It should only be a few more days before the sneakers are in comfortable mode, and I won't be running around as much as I have this week. There is light at the end of the tunnel, so to speak, and home chores can get some attention before the midnight hour. Thank goodness I can do the home stuff in bare feet..... my favorite attire of all. As hubby says: If your feet aren't comfortable, nothing's comfortable. And I'll be darned if he isn't right about that!

I am draggin it, in not so comfy shoes.
We just came back from an afternoon walk around the neighborhood, 1st/ thing "off with the shoes".
You are so right! If there is one thing I have learned about my wardrobe, it is to have good shoes. I will spend whatever it takes to make sure I have comfort.
Are those a picture of your sneakers? You have tiny feet!
I adore sneakres and that too new ones...
Keshi.
Five?!?! Only five?!?! Ok, I'm heading down to Atlanta right now and we're going shoe shopping. It's non-negotiable! :)
Honestly, I'm on my feet all day and there are some really comfy non-sneaker shoes out there. I will show you the way :)
My sneakers are old and I love them and I will never give them up...so I totally get wearing them out until their last legs! :)
The only thing better than sneakers is soft-soled moccasins. I can't ever wait for barefoot, either!
I hate trying to find a new pair of sneaks. Usually I get mens (wider).
I save all the wearable old pairs, n often need to dig them out back into service when The newer pairs don't hold up to punishmment.
Many pairs tho- get totally mangled!
myutopia~
I got a good visual on that, and know the feeling well! Some days I might put in an 18-hour workday, and the feet can only stand so much confined time. They yearn to breathe free!

That's the first thing I do when I come home too. Right at the door, because I don't like dragging in GA clay either. Plus it saves me an extra vacum job here and there.
How nice of you to have an afternoon walk... my walking buddy moved to Florida, and walks just aren't the same without her. You need a buddy to go with.... how else are you able to solve the worlds problems?

Hubby has the same theory about shoes, and will spend whatever it takes for that comfort. I'm slowly beginning to see his reasoning.
I wish those were my shoes.... aren't they the cutest things you ever did see? I love the little hearts on them!

Welcome! I'm glad you stopped by to comment.
New sneakers are nice... once they get broken in properly. My favorites are the ones with minimal ads all over them... nothing fancy, and all white.
Feel free to come back anytime!

Well, I previously had only four pairs of shoes, prior to my "new" purchase.... so there is hope, huh?
I thought about your last comment to me when I revealed what was in my closet a few posts back or so, and thought you'd be so proud of me for breaking down to get an extra pair. Baby steps.
But, hey, if you're ever coming down this way... we really must go shopping. Atlanta is known for it's many (and I mean many) malls.
The rich soccer Moms needs something to do in their spare time!

I used to save the old pairs, and put them into service in the yard.... till too many pairs added up. Now I implement the rule of buying a new pair, getting rid of an old. It's a little exchange program, so to speak.
And I will not go outside without a pair on because you never know where a snake is hiding out.
Hubby zapped one in the kisser a few weekends back, and didn't even know it was a snake, because it looked too much like a small stick that fell from the maple tree. Me... I am too freaked out by them altogether, and fear getting bit.
The term sneakers must be a east coast (New England and Maritimes) saying. I grew up calling them running shoes. Remember PF Flyers when you were a kid? They made you RUN fast!
Both my mother and my daughter have a shoe obsession. Neither can have enough in their closet. My Dad too. Consequently, it's still my father who buys me a new pair of "PF flyers" and my Mom? Well, she always shows up with a pair of sandals for me. I think when the go to Florida in the winter, they spend an inordinate amount of time in the bargain shoe malls or something. I will not complain. So, if my running shoes are looking a bit worn, I let my Dad know and et voila, a good pair of Reeboks show up!
So, somehow, somewhere along the way, I have accumulated many shapes and colours of shoes. My favourite type? Sandals. I have a pair of Clarks that are a dull goldish colour that I have worn walking miles in. They match everything and they're comfy. I hate shopping (except to Markets and grocery stores too BTW) so I'm glad others look after my fancy footwear.
Are Crocs big there? They are the clog looking clunky looking spongy feeling shoes that come in all colours? Everyone seems to have them on their feet this summer. I have a bright blue pair (a Mother's Day prezzie from my daughter) which I have worn in the water swimming last weekend, in my garden, to the market, even to work......They're ugly as hell, (I think) but really comfortable.
What am I wearing on my feet right now as I sit in my office procrastinating (but very much enjoying myself?) Nada. Sandals can be kicked off quite nicely thank you very much. My feet need freedom!
I only have about five pairs of shoes as well. Once my tennies get past a certain age, they're done. I can't wear them "'till the wheels fall off," it never seems to work for me.
I hate buying shoes. It seems that about half the time, they never break in right... they never ever feel really good. I absolutely agree that the best shoes are no shoes. There was a time when I almost never wore shoes and could walk on any surface. Hot or cold, rough of smooth, it made no difference.
Of course today, I have to wear them more often than not. I have two pairs of shoes that I wear regularly: Solomon all terrain shoes and Chippewa cowboy boots. Both are very good, although the boots took some time to get "there." Then there is an older pair of Nike tennies - ok shoes but I don't miss them or wear them much.
I also have two pairs of sandals that I wear very often. My one and only pair of dress shoes are Bostonian loafers. Hate them. They're stiff, give me blisters and I wear them only when a tie and jacket is required - not often at the moment.
Imelda Marcos I am not - Thank God!

I just thought of the first pair of shoes Chris received as a shower present, and they were a little pair of moccasins... frill included. They were so tiny and cute! I put them away to save for his first child, as I couldn't bear to part with them. It was my favorite shower present!

awareness~
PF Flyers.... oh yeah, I remember those. LOL! I'm sure I had more of my share when I was a kid, because there really wasn't so many brands out there then. Now the choices were endless.
I even remember when Converse struck it big, and everybody HAD to have a pair. Good memories!
How nice of your parents to send up Reeboks. They are my all time favorite now, even though I will settle for Dr. Scholls. I am picky enough when it comes to sneakers to like them to be all white, no big fancy name or lights, a nice thick sole, and athletic looking. The Value City I find them in is a hit or miss situation, and many times I miss.... but the shoes are usually about $10.00 - $20.00 cheaper than a shoe store, when I do hit.
Let's face it, the bargain gene never lost status in my DNA.
I'm not sure if I've heard of Crocs or not. The Martha Stewart line has a pair of garden shoes that sound very much like your description.... plus I've seen some of the same in garden sections at Lowes and Home Depot.
I haven't seen too many people wear them, though. Sneakers, work boots, and high-heels on the ladies are still the norm around here. I remember the 80's, we used to get all dressed up to work, but have our sneakers on while we walked to our offices. Dress shoes were under the desk, and we were required to change into them. Insert "Working Girl" visual here.
Can't blame you for liking that break in confines, and sandels are easy to slip off and on. I especially like my flip-flops just for that reason.

mike~
LOL! Great analogy about your tennies, and I wish I had more tenacity in that area. I wear mine to the absolute death, but at least they have become garden shoes well before then. And I only wear those in the yard or at the garden shops.
I miss going barefoot outside, and will only do it at the beach, never anywhere else. I hate stepping on things, and am just clumsy enough to always find something that injures. I hate having foot boo-boos! However, I'd like to frolick on my grass barefoot someday, because I do miss that feeling too. I'd have to do a snake check first though, and hope for more rain in order for the grass to return to it's luxurious carpet feel.
I don't miss dress shoes too much, as I also don't have much occasion to wear them either. However, every one should have a pair, and it's time I broke down. I'm like you, and have a hard time breaking them in, which keeps the task at bay till the last minute. No Imelda here either! LOL!
Thanks for stopping by... I've missed seeing you!
It's funny that this is a topic I have so much to write about and I'm not a shoe shopper! Maybe I am....but I never conciously go out and buy them. They just seem to find me. Yeah, my Dad? It's kind of a running (no pun intended) joke now that he still buys my "sneaks" and you know what? I ONLY prefer white with thick sole, no fancy schmancy glowy things on them either. I hate black running shoes, and won't even buy them for my son.
However.........I must tell you about my all time fav boots..... I do have a couple of pairs of "dress boots" for winter, little heel....need comfort......but the ones that ALWAYS get a comment....even from three piece suit business types I happen to pass on the street on the way to get a coffee? My shiny bright red waterproof boots....that glisten in the rain. Honest to God, they make people smile on a fall rainy day!! Not only that.......they're comfy and they were on sale! I found them one day in search of a pair of black flats in an old shoe store that has been around for millions of years and has inventory in the back of the store from the 50's. An old fart around 85 named George runs the place.........he pulled them out one day and told me to try them on....his only pair left.....I felt like Dorothy......tap, tap, tap...!!
Heeheee! Yeah, guess I like shoes.
Ellen - Bare feet all the way! I hate wearing my boots all day long! I wish I could just walk around without them too!
Good luck while your co-worker is on vacation, come to think of it, couldn't be all use one of those right about now with all this heat!
Peace & Hugs,
- Neo
Nothing better than comfortable happy feet, love barefoot, but when I do have to wear footwear I do like it to be special - whether it's sparkly flip flops, snazzy trainers, or 'feel good for special occassion' heels - my feet have to have my attention every morning and evening - sleep without foot cream and massage doesn't feel right.... :-)

I think all this talk about shoes has revealed the inner Imelda in you, sweetie. LOL! What a cool story about the boots, it reminds me of the song "These Boots Were Made For walking".
I actually used to love shoe shopping in my 20's & 30's... but have gotten stodgy over the years. If they are comfortable, I want to get on with life and find a nice kitchen store to visit. I could stay in there for hours!

You betcha! But only when I'm in my house.
Yup, it's time for the brain to decompress a bit. Hubby's family has planed a "family vacation" that falls over my B-day weekend. I think they keep begging me to come because they might have something up their sleeve. Maybe not... oh well, I'm sure there will be cake anyway. Since it's a long weekend, I can still take some more time later on. My nephew is getting married at the end of September, and I'd like to go up there then.... but everything depends on the funds.
Either way, just not answering phones, rolling silverware, or planning parties will be nice to be away from for a few days.

Welcome to my garden, and I'm glad to see you brought your decorative shoes! I secretly miss those days when I used to get all gussied up in those cute pumps to go dancing.
But years of waitressing has worn the "dogs" down, and now I go strictly for comfort. I did save some of those shoes, and have them tucked away in the back of my closet, as I never wear them anymore.
Thanks for stopping by, and feel free to drop in anytime!
now i mostly buy dr.scholls shoes only . there are so comfy and stylish to a degree . good choice !
ellen i think i've got you beat.. i only own 3 pairs of shoes. 1 pair of sneaks, one pair of dress casual loafers that i got form payless, and 1 pair of birkenstocks- which i swear by.. they are the most comfortable sandals around. i just love them and i wear them as long as i can around here.. often into early winter with socks... they don't look terrible with socks as long as your wearing pants.. just don't do it with shorts b/c that's just stupid.
one of my problems with shoes is that's its just hard to find shoes in my size.. 10.5 wide, and if that's unavailable, and it usually is except at payless, then i have to go to 11. yikes! half the time shoe makers don't make shoes past 9.5 or 10w so i'm limited just with that.
i used to be able to get away with 9.5/10 but my feet grew when i was pregnant last. i sure hope it doesn't happen again, b/c then i'll probably be limited to mens shoes, and how am i supposed to find dress shoes in the men's dept. big feet suck. and b/c of that i hate shoe shopping
john~
I remember when Dr.Scholls came out with sandels in the 70's, and I had to have a pair.... because everybody else did. They were not all that comfortable for me as I have a very low arch (flat feet), and the wooden arch in the sandel was high. It took awhile, but I got used to them.
In all the years since, I've been on a strict budget (having a kid will do that) and I settled for anything cheap. Another big mistake. Now I go for comfort as much as possible, and I was surprised that Scholls had come out with a sneaker line that was inexpensive. They are very comfortable, and fit all the other requirements I like in a sneaker.

I used to complain about my long feet when they were size 8, because all the other girls had 5, 6, and 7's. It seemed like all the pretty shoes were small sizes, and they made clodhoppers for us with the big feet. I'm a 8 1/2 now, and glad my growing days are over. My Dad used to tell me that there was no shame in having long feet.... after all, they needed to keep you up and moving. Dad is where I inherited my "mostly" flat feet from, and he used to have issues with that when he was growing up.
I did notice that anytime I lost or gained weight, my foot size changed as well. Who'da thought that?
If I could wear flip-flops all the time, I would be a very happy man. I'm not very fond of socks, so I only wear shoes if I have to, if I had my choice, it would be bare feet and flip-flops all year round. But that becomes difficult in my climate here. :)
LOL, I am proud that you are making progress! Soon, we'll get you up to 10 and from there, it will just snowball! :)
Ellen - I hear ya. I'm debating whether or not to take off for my birthday. I guess I should make my mind up before it comes and goes.
Or, maybe I should take the day after off because I know I'll definitely have a hangover. LOL
Maybe your right, they could be planning a surprise party for ya.
Peace & Hugs,
- Neo

I could too, and luckily I do live in a climate that allows that for at least 3/4ths of the year. We don't get any real snow accumulation, but our winters (in February and March) do get very cold, and the socks are a must to keep the feet warm. Have you ever noticed that if your feet (or hands) are cold, you're cold?

All this talk about shoes was probably the boost in the behind I need to get out and splurge on a new pair.... something not for work, and something a little fun.
I can see the possibilities in it snowballing on me!

Put in for the day off, and take it! You deserve it as a present to yourself for all the hard work you put in all year. It's the other reason why I like the month of August, no other holidays to share it with... besides my own pesonal holiday.
Hey Ellen......
Just read your comments on Mike's blog......magic and needing a bit of a boost etc.
Wearing red shoes help with the magic! They make you all bouncy like!
Can you e-mail me via my blog so that I have an e-mail address for you? I have an idea that I would like to share with you. Enticing??? You bet!
Cheers.
Ellen - Maybe you're right. A day off a cold 30 pack and lay here and do nothing; except maybe go hiking down the trails.
Hmmmm, now that sounds like a plan!
Peace & Hugs,
- Neo
